Course Overview

This course refreshes and develops the competence of personnel currently accountable for fire fighting on vessels.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites Required!
In order to complete STCW Advanced Firefighting (AFF), delegates must hold:
    Delegates must be: At least 16 years of age Certified in STCW Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, or similar training acceptable to the MCA. Due to certain aspects of the course being potentially physically demanding and/or stressful, delegates will be required to confirm their medical fitness & physical ability to participate on this course by completing our centre medical self-screening form prior to course commencement

Course Content

Delegates completing an STCW Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting training course will be able to;
- Understand fire sciences leading to the causes and the consequences of fires on vessels
- Describe and demonstrate methods of fire extinguishment with the correct media
- Define strategies on controlling fires in various areas of the vessel in accordance with vessel procedures
- Recognise the dynamic effects firefighting activities impart on vessels
- Identify the correct methods to control dangerous goods fires, fuel fires and electrical fires
- Ensure effective communication is maintained throughout firefighting activities both on vessel and to shore based operations
- Understand the hierarchy in place regarding firefighting in accordance with policies
- Lead fire parties through training scenarios on-board the vessel
- Take control of firefighting operations including charge of the team
- Understand the inspection and maintenance requirements of fire detection equipment
- Understand the inspection and maintenance requirements of fixed and portable extinguishing systems
- Inspect equipment used by the fire team for serviceability and understand the need to do so
- Carry out inspections, tests and compile results of SCBA equipment
- Gain knowledge on how to assess the causes of fires and how to compile reports

  • Certification: A Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) certificate will be provided upon successful completion of this course.
  • Certificate validity (months): 60
  • Target audience: Anyone in a career at sea.
  • Revalidation: The course must be revalidated every 5 years.
  • Items to bring: Government Issued Photographic ID eg Driver Licence or Passport
  • Health prerequisites: Due to certain aspects of the course being potentially physically demanding and/or stressful, delegates will be required to confirm their medical fitness & physical ability to participate on this course by completing our centre medical self-screening form prior to course commencement
