UK Energy Minister Visits 3t to Discuss Skills Development for the Future Energy Workforce

3t welcomed UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks to its Dyce training centre to discuss how skills development underpins the UK’s energy ambitions.

Constructive discussions emphasised the need for early collaboration between government, industry, and the supply chain to accelerate progress and create real opportunities for the future energy workforce. A skilled workforce was highlighted as critical to delivering a sustainable transition and safeguarding long-term economic resilience.

The visit follows the autumn Budget announcement, which introduced the North Sea Future Plan which set out a path to grow greener energy industries, support the management of existing oil and gas fields for their lifespan, and help North Sea workers into growing industries such as renewables, defence, and advanced manufacturing.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said:

Centres like 3t are at the forefront of training up the next generation of highly skilled offshore workers to help power the UK. Our plan for the future of the North Sea sets a clear path to build on 60 years of success by scaling up clean energy industries while ensuring oil and gas continues for decades to come. This includes a new North Sea Jobs Service that will help skilled oil and gas workers seeking new opportunities in other growing sectors and signpost to specialist training where needed.”

Welcoming the Minister, Frode Scott Nilsen stressed the importance of early collaboration:

“Hosting Minister Shanks highlights the critical link between government, industry, and training providers. As the UK moves towards a greener future, the workforce must be fully equipped to meet these challenges head-on, with real roles and career pathways made available. We’ll work collaboratively to ensure our training continues to meet the demands of the energy sector as it evolves and keeps workers safe and competent for decades to come.”

As the energy landscape evolves, demand for adaptable, highly skilled professionals continues to grow. 3t is investing in cutting-edge technologies and workforce development programmes to prepare individuals and organisations for the opportunities and challenges ahead, ensuring the UK remains competitive and resilient.

The visit included a tour of the training facilities, training demonstrations, and conversations with trainees about their future in the UK energy sector.
